Alfio Quarteroni

  • Alfio Quarteroni is Professor of Mathematics at the EPFL and at the Politecnico di Milano and Director of MATHICSE and CADMOS at EPFL.

  • He is author of 20 books and more than 300 papers. He has been an invited speaker in more than 200 Conferences and Academic Departments worldwide. 

  • He is member of the Academia Europaea, the European Academy of Sciences, the Italian Academy of Sciences, the Lombard Academy of Science, recipient of the Galileian Chair, of the Laurea Honoris Causa in Naval Engineering, of the NASA Group Achievement Award. 

  • His research field is the numerical approximation of partial differential equations and its applications to Medicine, Sports, the Environment, and Technology. 

  •  His research group has carried out the numerical model and simulation for the twice winning America's Cup sailing yacht Alinghi in 2003 and 2007.

Plenary talk: Reduced order models: algorithms and applications

This talk will address the challenge of complexity in numerical simulations of complex physical problems. When the latter exhibit a multiscale and or a multiphysics nature,  appropriate mathematical models and accurate numerical methods are required to catch the essential features of the manifold components of the physical solution. Often the associated numerical problem is so large that devising computational reduction techniques, and developing efficient parallel algorithms by exploiting a dimensional reduction paradigm, becomes necessary.

The presentation will elaborate on some of these issues and illustrate a few representative applications.

More in particular, some general purpose numerical strategies, based on model order reduction, geometrical and algebraic reduction, will be reviewed and used with the aim of drastically reducing their computational complexity.
